What Is Alloy Wheel Refurbishment?

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

If you’re the owner of a car with alloy wheels, then you’ll understand the need to make sure they keep looking their best. Not only can damaged alloy wheels affect their appearance, but they can also damage your vehicle’s value too, something which could have a big impact if you are currently looking to sell your car.

Thankfully, if your alloy wheels are damaged, there is a solution out there which can refurbish them in next to no time.

If you have ever wondered what is alloy wheel refurbishment, in our latest blog post we help you to find out – read on to get yourself up to speed!

1. What is alloy wheel refurbishment used for?

If your alloy wheels have been scratched against the kerb and are showing signs of damage, alloy wheel refurbishment is a cost effective way to improve their appearance, compared to buying a replacement alloy wheel for example.

Conducted by a professional refurbisher who has the skills and experience to perform the job to a high standard, all scuffs and scratches will be inspected and repaired and once the work has been completed, you’ll struggle to remember what your alloy wheels looked like before!

2. What does alloy wheel refurbishment involve?

During alloy wheel refurbishment, the tyres will be completely taken off your vehicle’s wheels. Prior to any work being completed, any existing treatment on the wheels will be stripped to allow for ultimate adhesion of the new finish and to remove any corrosion. For the next step, any scuffs or scratches will be rubbed down, or filled and sanded, depending on how bad they are.

Once smoothing has taken place, the alloy wheels will be cleaned in a blast cabinet, degassed to allow any trapped air which could damage the final finish to escape, and the wheel will then be primed with a powder coat and placed in an oven to cure.

Finally, the professional will start painting your wheel, beginning with a base coat that is usually in a silver metallic paint colour, before lacquering with a final powder coat.

3. How much does alloy wheel refurbishment cost?

Alloy wheel refurbishment is much more budget friendly than you may expect. Cost varies depending on size and finish but for a standard alloy wheel, did you know that prices could start from just £68.50?

4. What else do I need to know?

When you have your alloy wheels refurbished, delivery and collection of your vehicle is usually part of the service. It can also take much less time to refurbish your alloy wheels than you may think – in fact, in just 3 days, most wheels will be completed and looking as good a new.

Best of all, it’s possible to match any manufacturer colour and as the whole wheel will be painted there won’t be any colour discrepancy either!
